OBJECTIVE

1. To establish standards for an effective orientation to specific institutions and the Correctional Service Canada (CSC).

2. This CD is to be read in conjunction with CD 705 Intake Assessment Process .

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

3. Institutional Heads will establish an orientation program that will introduce offenders to the Correctional Service Canada and assist them to make the most productive use of their incarceration.

4. Institutional Heads will ensure that the local orientation process is completed within two weeks of an offender's arrival at a federal institution.

5. All staff will encourage offenders to fully participate in the reception and orientation process.

ORIENTATION

6. Upon arrival at a new institution, each offender will be provided with an orientation to the penitentiary/Healing Lodge. Topics to be presented in the orientation program will include:

  1. Health Care Services;
  2. rules and regulations governing the conduct of offenders;
  3. offender rights and responsibilities;
  4. program opportunities;
  5. security procedures;
  6. case management process;
  7. institutional operations;
  8. finance;
  9. Visits and Correspondence;
  10. the availability of and how to access spiritual, educational and vocational counselling;
  11. the availability of and how to access spiritual and cultural services; and
  12. Mother-Child Program where applicable.
