What is new/changed?

Commissioner's Directive 768 - Institutional Mother-Child Program

A technical amendment has been made to clearly direct staff to reassess the risk that the mother may pose to herself or to others following a decision to terminate participation in the mother-child program and remove the child from the insitution.

Why was the policy changed?

This change responds to one of the recommendations from the national investigation into the hostage-taking at the Okimaw Ohci Healing Lodge which took place in October 2001. Following a decision to terminate participation in the mother-child program and remove a child from the institution, the policy clearly directs staff to reassess the risk the mother may pose to herself or to others.

Accountability?

No change in accountability.

Who will be affected by the policy?

Primary workers and other staff will be required to conduct a risk assessment following the child's departure from the institution.

Expected cost?

Not applicable.

Other impacts?

None.
