What is new/changed?

The Commissioner's Directive 805, entitled "Administration of Medication" has been revised. The following elements have been added in order to provide some clarification, and make the directive easier to follow:

  • Definitions;
  • Regional responsibilities;
  • Institutional responsibilities for Health Services professionals including pharmacists and nursing staff;
  • Responsibilities of non-medical personnel (paragraphs 21 and 34 of the CD); and
  • The requirement for each institutional to develop a Standing Order for the delivery of medication by non-medical staff (paragraph 35).

Why was the policy changed?

To clearly outline the responsibilities of Regional Administrator Health Services, institutional Chief, Health Services and other Health Services staff.

To clarify the role and responsibilities of non-medical personnel in the delivery of medication.

What is the purpose of the change?

To clarify key terms and responsibilities to ensure adequate and consistent delivery of medication to inmates and offenders.

How was it developed?

The Commissioner's Directive was revised with the assistance and cooperation of Health Services Staff in the field. Health Services also solicited the input of the National Health Services Council and of the two Unions, the USGE and PIPSC and the Correctional Investigator.

Accountability?

Health Services staff are accountable for implementation of the Commissioner's Directive. A multi-disciplinary team of clinical staff and correctional officers is required to work together to effectively implement this policy

Who will be affected by the policy?

Health Services staff, and other non-medical staff who deliver medications to inmates.
