Commissioner's Directive 843
Prevention, Management and Response
to Suicide and Self-Injuries

Why was the policy changed?

To clarify the responsibilities of Institutional Heads and District Directors with respect to ensuring that staff have received suicide prevention training, and to include a new requirement to ensure staff are provided with a two hour refresher training in suicide prevention every two years.

What has changed?

A technical amendment was made to paragraph 12 a. of CD 843, Prevention, Management and Response to Suicide and Self-Injuries in order to clarify the responsibilities of Institutional Heads and District Directors with respect to staff suicide prevention training.

How was it developed?

The policy change was developed with Health Services and Learning and Career Development.

Accountabilities?

Institutional Heads and District Directors are responsible for the implementation of this policy through the designation of a Suicide Prevention Coordinator for each institution and district.

The Assistant Deputy Commissioners, Operations, will be responsible for ensuring verification of training and action plans for those who require training.

Health Services, National Headquarters, in coordination with Learning and Career Development, will provide a computerized self-study module for refresher training.

Who will be affected by the policy?

All CSC staff who have regular contact with offenders.

Expected cost?

Costs are expected in the form of staff time and back fill in order for staff to complete:

  • the Correctional Training Program (CTP) or the New Employee Orientation Program (NEOP), and
  • the two hour refresher training every two years.

These costs will be determined by the number of staff requiring the training.

Other impacts?

A special course code will be created for the two hour refresher training.
