CSC-SCCOFFENDER ART RAISES MONEY FOR CHARITY
Immediate Release

Ottawa, October 22, 2003 - The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC), in partnership with Waddington's Auctioneers and Appraisers, hosted a charity auction of offender art at the National Art Gallery last night in Ottawa. It was organized with the help of the Prison Arts Foundation, and the Association for Recreational and Cultural Activities with People in Detention. The event raised more than $20,000 for charity. The Honourable Wayne Easter, Solicitor General of Canada, and Ms. Lucie McClung, Commissioner of CSC both attended.

The auction featured artwork created and donated by offenders serving federal sentences. Proceeds will benefit the Illitiit Society of Nunavut, the United Way and the Prison Arts Foundation. "This event showcases just one of the many ways offenders can and do give back to their community while serving federal sentences," Solicitor General Easter said.

Offenders were provided with an opportunity to give back to the community by using their artistic talents to help charities. Last night's auction was the fourth hosted by CSC. It featured 61 pieces of art created by 27 offenders.

"By donating their artistic talents, these offenders are learning how to contribute to society and are taking steps towards living law-abiding lives," CSC Commissioner Lucie McClung said.

Offender giving back to the community initiatives take place all year round.
