CSC-SCCRESTORATIVE JUSTICE WEEK -- PATHWAYS TO A STRENGTHENED COMMUNITY
Immediate Release

Ottawa -- Community groups across the country are holding events to encourage people to learn about restorative justice, as part of Restorative Justice Week, November 16-22.

Throughout the week, the human element of crime -- the impact on people, their communities and their relationships -- will be highlighted. Communities in all regions will be holding forums, making presentations and encouraging discussion about restorative justice. The Correctional Service of Canada is marking the week with presentations in institutions throughout the country, and by sponsoring events in the community. Restorative justice provides support and safe opportunities for communication between those affected by crime, including the victim and the offender, to encourage reparation and accountability.

"Restorative justice initiatives across the country are helping people whose lives have been affected by crime," said Solicitor General Wayne Easter. "By having victims, offenders and community work together in a process to heal the wounds of crime, we are contributing to safe and strong communities."

"The Correctional Service of Canada supports and encourages the work of community volunteers and partners involved in restorative justice," said Commissioner Lucie McClung. "These groups help contribute to our common goal of safer and stronger communities by adopting restorative justice approaches such as mediation, peacemaking, and other forms of dialogue."

As part of Restorative Justice Week, the Correctional Service of Canada will be presenting the 5th Annual Ron Wiebe Restorative Justice Award. This award recognizes Canadians who have demonstrated, through their work or lifestyle, ways of transforming human relationships by enabling and promoting communication and healing between people in conflict, be they victims, offenders, colleagues, families, or neighbours. This year's ceremony will be held at the Federal Training Centre in Laval, Quebec, on November 19.
