CSC-SCC

Communiqué

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

STATEMENT

Ottawa, May 23, 2004 - The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) denies categorically media reports that political direction was given by Minister Anne McLellan to change in any way our reporting requirements regarding incidents in Edmonton in anticipation of a federal election. At no time did the Service receive any such direction from the Minister or her staff.

CSC routinely reports publicly major incidents in our institutions or in the community. Operational needs will periodically require additional reporting. We have not and would not change our reporting policies and practices for the political advantage of any candidate including the Minister.

Lucie McClung
Commissioner, Correctional Service Canada
