CITIZENS PLAY IMPORTANT ROLE IN CANADA'S CORRECTIONAL PROCESS

Ottawa, November 22, 2004 – The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) is celebrating Citizens' Advisory Committees' (CACs) Awareness Week, from November 21 to 27, 2004. CSC recognizes the valuable role played by citizens in assisting CSC to accomplish its Mission and mandate.

CACs are active participants in the correctional process. Committee members work to develop stronger links between their communities and the correctional system; they provide advice and input on correctional matters, and act as impartial observers in the daily function of CSC facilities and operations.

"Strong and safe communities are an essential part of the fabric of our society and are critical to providing Canadians with the security they need to build a better future for themselves and their families," says the Honourable Anne McLellan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Canada. "The Government of Canada recognizes the work of CAC members and their role in contributing to public safety and security."

"The involvement of citizens is vital to a just and democratic society," states Don Head, CSC's A/Commissioner. "CAC members help strengthen our communities which mutually benefit all citizens and the organization."

"Members of the Citizens' Advisory Committees are dedicated people who promote safe communities," says Sean Taylor, CAC National Chair. "The participation of these citizens in the correctional system ensures that the interests of all Canadians remain a priority."

All federal penitentiaries and parole districts in Canada involve these citizens to assist them in the delivery of correctional programs and services. During Citizens' Advisory Committees' Awareness Week, local and regional CACs will be informing the public about their roles and encouraging community participation. There are currently 105 CACs with close to 600 members all across Canada.
