SPRINGHILL INSTITUTION TO HOST SPECIAL OLYMPIADS

SPRINGHILL, NS, July 4, 2005 - On Wednesday, July 6, 2005, staff and inmates from the Springhill Institution in Nova Scotia will host their third Special Olympiads for developmentally challenged people.

Working with CSC staff, a group of Springhill Institution inmates will organize various competitions for approximately 110 clients from The Bridge Group of Amherst, GOVRC in Springhill, and the Sunset Homes, a special care residence located in the nearby town of Pugwash.

Offenders will assist and supervise athletes in friendly competitions such as softball throw and hit, mini golf, relays, short distance run, long jump, and horseshoe pitch.

This Springhill Institution Special Olympiads is part of a national initiative proudly supported by Correctional Service Canada because it provides opportunities for inmates to make a significant contribution to various worthwhile community projects.

Springhill Institution is a medium-security institution for men, as well as the Atlantic Regional Reception Centre.

Since a security clearance is needed for everyone entering a CSC institution, media representatives planning to attend should contact the site at the number listed below no later than 3:00, Tuesday, July 5th, 2005.
