In honour of scholarship and creativity in the respiratory sciences, CIHR'S Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health (ICRH) in collaboration with the Canadian Thoracic Society (CTS) have established a Distinguished Lectureship in the Respiratory Sciences. Dr. François Maltais, a renowned researcher from Laval University, was invited to deliver the inaugural lecture in recognition of his extraordinary achievements in respiratory sciences and the impact of his work on Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). ICRH also recognizes Dr. Maltais' strong commitment to mentoring. His speech entitled, "Peripheral Muscle Dysfunction in COPD: Just a Curiosity or Clinically Relevant?" was delivered at the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) CHEST 2006 conference on Monday, October 23rd.
In 2002, CIHR's Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health (ICRH), established the annual ICRH Distinguished Prize in Cardiovascular Science, in honour of scholarship and creativity in the cardiovascular sciences. This prize is awarded annually in conjunction with the Canadian Cardiovascular Society (CCS) and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada (HSFC) at the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress (CCC).
This year's prize was awarded to Dr. Daniel Levy for his outstanding work as Director of the Framingham Heart Study. Dr. Levy's talk "NHLBI's Framingham Heart Study: Past Achievements, Current Directions, and Future Ambitions" was delivered to wide acclaim on October 24, 2006, in Vancouver.
