Gender Equality Consultation

The on-line consultation on gender equality is now officially closed.

In the fall of 2005, SWC conducted a cross-country consultation process to obtain the views of Canadians on future directions for advancing equality for women in Canada. The process included an online questionnaire, which was available on the SWC Web site from September 9 to November 10, 2005.

The Report on Status of Women Canada's On-Line Consultation on Gender Equality is now available. The questionnaire and related material can be found in the "Archives" section of this Web site.

Status of Women Canada is encouraged by the level of response, the support for this online method as a way of reaching Canadians and the high degree of interest and thoughtfulness expressed in the open sections of the questionnaire. We sincerely thank everyone who participated.

Status of Women Canada (SWC) has been coordinating a dialogue on potential elements of a long-term federal strategy and plan of action to advance equality for women. Over 2,200 Canadian women and men responded to the on-line questionnaire. We also brought together organizations and individuals for six regional two-day consultations held in the Atlantic, Prairies, British Columbia, the North, Quebec and Ontario. Then, on November 1 and 2, at a national consultation, the main themes that were emerging were further discussed and refined.

Overall, we are encouraged by the contributions, support and constructive criticism we have received. They will be immensely valuable to the government as it determines future directions and actions. You may be interested in the opening statement to the national consultation. You can also click here to see two handouts from the national consultation that provided point form overviews of what we had heard so far - one on policy and program actions and one on accountability mechanisms.
