Canadian Transportation Agency to Conclude Hearing on an Application Filed by Ferroequus to Use Facilities Owned by CN

WINNIPEG - May 8, 2002 - The Canadian Transportation Agency will start hearing today the final arguments of parties and interveners in view of concluding, by Wednesday night or Thursday morning, its public hearing on the merits of an application filed by the Ferroequus Railway Company. The application seeks the right to run and operate trains, in order to haul grain, over specified lines of Canadian National (CN) between the Camrose, Alberta interchange and the Port of Prince Rupert, British Columbia.

The Canadian Transportation Agency is an independent federal administrative quasi-judicial tribunal whose procedures are governed by the rules of natural justice. The application of these rules will ensure that all parties receive fair and equitable treatment.

IMPORTANT NOTE TO ASSIGNMENT EDITORS

The Canadian Transportation Agency has, in law, all the powers, rights and privileges of a superior court. Because of the quasi-judicial nature of the hearing, panel members will not answer reporters' questions. Reporters may try to interview representatives of the participants before the day's session begins, during breaks, lunch or after the day's session. A spokesperson for the Agency will be available on site to answer general questions about the Agency and the hearing process.

The Agency will permit cameras in the hearing room, to take still photos or footage of the panel members and participants, at specified locations ONLY. Reporters may stay throughout the session and may tape-record.
