PWGSC federal lead for Sydney Tar Ponds cleanup

PWGSC is managing the federal portion of the ten-year cleanup project of the Sydney Tar Ponds and Coke Ovens site in Nova Scotia. The Government of Canada will contribute up to $280 million in funding, with the Nova Scotia provincial government providing an additional $120 million. The cleanup will use proven, effective technologies to safely treat and destroy the worst contaminants. The remaining material will be treated before both sites are encapsulated with an engineered containment system and landscaped. Once the cleanup is completed, the province will assume ownership of the properties. The project was announced in May 2004.

Government of Canada Building, Charlottetown

Government of Canada Building, Charlottetown

The Government of Canada Building in Charlottetown will be the most environmentally friendly building ever constructed by PWGSC. The future four-story building will blend advanced environmental design features and technologies, with the character and historic architecture that is evident throughout Charlottetown. The building will serve as a showcase for environmental technologies including a "green" roof, hydrogen fuel cell, and recycled construction materials, to name a few.

PWGSC's real property professional expertise showcased

PWGSC's property management team in Western Region won the prestigious 2004 BOMA International Office Building of the Year (TOBY) Award in the Government Buildings category for the RCMP "K" Division Headquarters Building in Edmonton. This is the first Canadian submission that has won such a prestigious international award since the creation of that category in 1991. The RCMP Building was the only Canadian entry in the category, competing against six other international entries. The award was presented to PWGSC in June 2004 at the BOMA North American Congress held in Toronto.
