Canadian Transportation Agency Fines Aircraft Operator

OTTAWA - May 31, 2006 - The Canadian Transportation Agency's Enforcement Division has imposed a $13,000 fine on a Red Lake, Ontario aircraft operator for illegally transporting passengers and baggage in a two-day period in 2004.

Evidence gathered during surveillance and investigation showed that on July 31 and August 1, 2004 Geary's Sportsman's Lodge transported passengers and baggage at or near Balmertown, Ontario, using its private aircraft without holding a licence, thereby contravening the Canada Transportation Act.

The Enforcement Division of the Canadian Transportation Agency is charged, through periodic inspections and targeted investigations, with ensuring compliance by enforcing provisions of the Canada Transportation Act and related regulations which apply to all publicly available air services in Canada. Targeted investigations are often undertaken as a result of information received from outside sources such as the general public, licensed air carriers or other enforcement agencies.

If you have concerns about an operator, information that an aircraft may be used illegally, or if you know someone who may be planning to use the services of an unlicensed operator, contact the Enforcement Division of the Canadian Transportation Agency at 1-888-222-2592 or via the Agency's Web site at: www.cta.gc.ca.

The Canadian Transportation Agency is an independent quasi-judicial tribunal that regulates various modes of transportation under Government of Canada jurisdiction, including air, marine and rail. Its procedures are governed by the rules of natural justice to ensure that all parties receive fair and equitable treatment.
