How the Tour Works

Take the virtual tour of the new Health Canada Web site to learn more about all of the new ways to find information! Click on one of the sections in the menu below to skip around the tour.

Introduction

Health Canada

You may have noticed that we've made some changes to the Health Canada Web site since the last time you visited us.

Among the many changes we have made to the Web site, the most significant include:

  • You don't need to know how the department is organized to find the information you want - all of our 60,000+ pages are now organized by subject, using terms you can understand.
  • One site, One look. We have combined 100 or more Health Canada sites into one Web site, distinguished through the use of vibrant colours and common templates.
  • More ways to find the information you need - and to get there more quickly !!!
  • Find information by:
    • subject,
    • audience,
    • organizational unit,
    • alphabetically, or
    • through a word search.

Information by Subject

11 major subject areas

The most significant change to our site is that information is now organized by subject. Key features of our new approach include:

  • We have organized all of the information available on our site into 11 major subject areas.
  • The subject navigation is available along the left-hand side of every page on the Web site.
  • As much as possible, the navigation is organized in alphabetical order.

Drop-down list

When you first enter a particular subject, you should notice a couple of things:

  • The information available in that subject is accessible from the left-hand navigation through a drop-down list. We call this the "Theme" level.
  • The information at the subject level is intended to be quite broad, but becomes more and more specific the deeper you click into our site.

Once in a Theme, as you go deeper into that area, the navigation moves to the right-hand side of every page.

One other key feature on our pages are the "breadcrumbs" that identify the path taken to get to a particular page. The breadcrumbs are clickable links so feel free to use them to move back or around to other areas of the Web site.

Information by Organization

Information by Organization

For those who are more familiar with the way our department is organized or who have come to recognize information produced by specific Branches within Health Canada, you can still search for information by organizational unit.

Clicking on the "About Health Canada" subject and the 3rd theme under that section called "Branches, Regions and Agencies", will bring you to Health Canada's organizational chart.

Each organizational unit within Health Canada, including our regional offices, are described in greater detail and each click further down into an organizational unit will lead you deeper into our organization.

Information by Audience - Just for You

Information by Audience - Just for You

Whether you are a youth, parent, educator or health professional, the "Just for You" section is a place where you can find quick links to relevant sections of the site for you.

If you are part of an audience that is not reflected in our existing list, let us know and we'll be happy to create a quick list just for you.

Search Engine

Search Engine

A key reference tool on any good Web site is the search engine - the new Health Canada Web site is no different.

We have made significant improvements to our search engine and your search results should be better as a result.

A-Z Index

A-Z Index

From "Aboriginal Peoples" to "Yellow Fever", the A-Z Index is an ever-growing list of topics. Searching for information is as easy as clicking on the letter that corresponds with the first letter of your topic of interest.

How do I find information on ...

How do I find information on ...

We've added a drop-down menu on the Health Canada homepage called "How do I find information on ..."

It answers a few of those often-asked questions like how to order a publication or where to find Canada's Food Guide to Healthy Eating.

Site Map

Site Map

A Web site the size of Health Canada's can be a bit hard to figure out sometimes so click through to our "Site Map" to see the entire site at a glance.

The Site Map can be found by navigating through the "Help" page which is available is on every page from the top menu.

By the way, the "Help" page is a good way to access some other tools for getting around obstacles you may encounter.

Contact Us

Contact Us

Have a question? Looking for a Health Canada expert? Want more information on a topic of interest? Do you see a broken link or other technical problem that our Webmaster should know about? You can reach these and other Health Canada staff through our "Contact Us" page.

Along with a more generic "Contact Us" section under "About Health Canada", We also offer more specific contact pages under each of our 11 subject to help you narrow your search to the specific group you're looking to communicate with.

The "Contact Us" page is available from the top menu on every page of our site.

Get Involved

Get Involved

The "Get Involved" section of the Health Canada homepage provides a few different ways for you to get more involved in the work of the department. Whether you want to sign-up for one of our topic-specific e-mail lists or you want to contribute to a public consultation on a timely issue, you're only a click away.

We want to draw your attention to "Public Involvement & Consultations" under "About Health Canada". In this section, you will find all of the public involvement opportunities that enable Health Canada to fulfill its legislative mandate, deliver programs, launch new initiatives and build public trust. It's your way of making sure your voice is heard or your views included in the review of timely health issues.

We hope you have enjoyed your tour of the new Health Canada Web site. Remember to come back to visit us on a regular basis as we are working hard to find ways to serve you better.
