SUBJECT: Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan

PURPOSE
1.1
This directive is to advise of a change in procedure for employees paying
Alberta Health Care premiums, upon reaching age 65.
2
POLICY
2.1
Prior to July 1, 1994, Alberta residents age 65 and over were entitled to free
coverage under the Alberta Health Care Plan.
2.2
Effective July 1, 1994, residents of Alberta, age 65 and over, are no longer
entitled to free coverage.
3
PROCEDURES/INSTRUCTIONS
3.1
Prior to this change, client departments had to stop the deduction for
employees reaching age 65. Free coverage took effect the 1st day of the month
following the 65th birthday.
3.2
Effective immediately, departments are instructed to continue deductions
for those employees paying Alberta Health Care.
3.3
In the case of employees over age 65 whose Alberta Health Care deductions were
stopped, deductions should be recommenced effective July 1, 1994. Personnel
offices should first contact affected employees to determine whether the single
or family rate applies.
3.4
Employees over age 65 who qualify for reduced premiums will receive notices
from Alberta Community Development. Personnel offices should instruct employees
to provide such notices in order to cease regular employee premium
deductions.
