How to Protect Your Company
A few simple guidelines can help Canadian companies and public organizations reduce their vulnerability to
economic espionage:
- Ensure that your company has appropriate policies and procedures in place for the classification, control,
and protection of sensitive documents.
- Protect computer databases and network links from unauthorized access.
- Properly store and dispose of sensitive documents.
- Discuss sensitive company matters only in secure locations.
- Implement controls on employee and visitor access to sensitive facilities, materials, and so on, based on
the “need-to-know” principle.
- Use caution when choosing the medium used for business communications (i.e., cellular telephones, fax and
telephone lines).
- Educate and sensitize your employees to the threat of economic espionage, and the dangers this may pose to
job security and the organization’s well-being. Emphasize that all employees share responsibility for
adherence to security policies and procedures.
