Working Against Espionage

CSIS works to counter espionage activity by monitoring the activities of known or suspected foreign intelligence officers in Canada, and by preventing foreign visitors, students, or delegates suspected of clandestine intelligence activities from entering Canada.

CSIS’s investigations of clandestine activities of foreign governments enable CSIS to forewarn the Canadian government when free-market competition is deliberately tilted against Canadian industry.

A key component of CSIS’s efforts to counter economic espionage is its Liaison/Awareness Program. By participating in this voluntary program, Canadian businesses can gain a better understanding of the threat posed by espionage and take steps to protect themselves.

(Note: CSIS does not investigate industrial espionage—the practice of one private company spying on another. If these activities are of a criminal nature, they may be investigated by law enforcement agencies. Civil remedies may also be available.)
