Healthy Schools

Schools are widely recognized as a key setting for health promotion. They are uniquely positioned to influence several of the key determinants of healthy child and adolescent development. Some of these determinants include:

  • Accessibility of health and social services;
  • Education;
  • Individual capacity and coping skills;
  • Personal health practices;
  • Social and physical environments; and,
  • Social supports.

Schools which have established positive social and physical environments that respect and support all students will be more likely to foster their development in a meaningful and health-enhancing manner.

A comprehensive approach to school-based health promotion involves all members of the school and community who can contribute to the well-being of students, including students, school staff, parents, and community partners. This school community partnership takes action on the determinants of health to improve and maintain the health of students and create health-promoting learning environments.

Engaging students in decision-making is important to this approach. It can help students have a greater sense of control, achievement and influence over their lives, and can contribute to their health, learning, personal and social development and security.
