Welcome to the Ontario Tobacco Research Unit. Funded by the Ontario
Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care in 1993 as the research component
of the Ontario
Tobacco Strategy, the Ontario Tobacco Research Unit (OTRU) is
a focal point for an active tobacco control research network in Ontario.
To learn more about our team, the OTRU network, OTRU's activities
and tobacco control research, take a moment to explore the following
areas of our site:
Who We Are
OTRU is led by a multi-disciplinary team of seven university-based Principal
Investigators. Staff in Toronto and Waterloo
coordinate OTRU's activities and carry out our research, evaluation and
dissemination projects. An Advisory Board
representing a number of diverse stakeholders counsels OTRU on matters
of strategic planning.
Network
In addition to our Principal Investigators,
many Co-Investigators, Collaborating
Investigators, Affiliates, and Partners
complete the OTRU network.
Research
Visit the research section to discover what research
is being conducted in Ontario, review possible
funding sources, including the OTRU
Investigator Award, find out about upcoming meetings,
conferences and workshops, explore data sources
and questions about tobacco use in Canada, and investigate journals
publishing tobacco control related research.
Monitoring and Evaluation
Each year, the Monitoring and Evaluation Group
produces a four-part annual Monitoring
Report Series assessing areas such as smoking patterns among adults
and youth, public attitudes to tobacco policies, and broad strategic issues
in tobacco control.
Teaching and Training
If you are a university student or supervise students, be sure to check
out information about the Ashley Studentships
for Research in Tobacco Control program including eligibility
criteria, application forms, and a
listing of our recent award winners. The University
of Toronto graduate level course, "Tobacco
and Health: From Cells to Society" is also offered to students
at the University of Waterloo, the University of McGill, Lakehead University
and the University of British Columbia via video-conferencing.
Reports
OTRU provides access to research materials relevant to other researchers,
public health professionals, and policy makers in Ontario and elsewhere.
Check this section for recent Special Reports,
and Research Updates. We also highlight
recent OTRU staff publications,
a monthly list of selected journal articles,
and external reports of interest to
the tobacco control community.
