Many seniors suffer from sensory impairments. Their ability to
live independently in the community is jeopardized by these losses. These
observations were made by the National Advisory Council on Aging (NACA)
during a national consultation held in 1988-89 on the barriers to independent
living faced by seniors and were the impetus for this series of in-depth
papers on sensory loss. Essentially, NACA thought it was important
and timely to inform seniors and those who care for them on how to deal
with physical changes that can affect their lives profoundly.
