520,000 Contraband Cigarettes Seized by the Central St.Lawrence Valley Regional Task Force

(Cornwall, Ontario) On December 6th , 2006, shortly after 4:00 p.m., Canadian Border Service Agency officers followed a suspicious 1997 Ford F150 pick up truck in Cornwall, Ontario and observed the occupants of the truck abandon the truck at the corner lot of Fourth Street and Cumberland Street. After watching the truck for one hour the officers approached the truck and could observe cases of contraband cigarettes throughout the truck. Officers from the Central St. Lawrence Valley RCMP detachment were contacted to seize the illegal cigarettes and smuggling truck.

Located inside the truck were 1,800 cartons of Native Lights cigarettes and 800 cartons of Laurel Canadian Blend cigarettes. This seizure represents a total of 520,000 cigarettes being intercepted before being sold illegally. The pick up truck is registered to a 31 year old female resident of Sixth Street West in Cornwall, Ontario. No charges will be laid in this investigation.

The RCMP takes the illegal movement of tobacco very seriously and monitors the contraband tobacco trade in concert with its domestic and international partners, such as the Canadian Border Service Agency and the United States. As an intelligence-led organization, the RCMP works closely with Aboriginal, municipal, provincial and international organizations to enhance enforcement strategies. Shared information is designed to form the basis of our intelligence-led approach to policing.
