Statement by The Honourable Bob Speller
Minister Responsible for the Canadian Food Inspection Agency

Ottawa, December 23, 2003 - Earlier today there was a presumptive positive test result for BSE on a single cow from a farm in Washington State. Final results from testing are expected on December 25.

Our singular focus is protecting the health and safety of Canadians. In concert with Health Canada, our actions are guided by international standards.

This is a very regrettable event for an industry which has been under severe stress and strain during the past many months – on both sides of the border.

My officials and I will be working closely with producers and industry stakeholders in the days ahead.

Officials are also working cooperatively with their American counterparts, offering them the expertise that Canada has gained during the recent past.

The Government of Canada is of the view that solutions to dealing with BSE must continue to involve a North American approach.

Our every action will be taken to provide maximum protection for public health and the security of Canadians, on the basis of science, and the best available expertise.
