HEALTH HAZARD ALERTFRISCHE ZWIEBEL METTWURST (ONION SPREAD) MAY CONTAIN DANGEROUS BACTERIAOTTAWA, January 25, 1999 - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is warning the public not to consume Frische Zwiebel Mettwurst (Onion Spread), a raw spiced pork sausage, in the 200 gram package because the product may contain Escherichia coli O157 bacteria. R. Denninger Ltd. of Hamilton, Ontario is voluntarily recalling all 200 gram packages of Frische Zwiebel Mettwurst sold in Ontario with best before dates up to and including Feb. 9, 1999. One illness has been reported to date. E. coli O157 may cause serious and potentially life-threatening illness by producing a toxin that breaks down the lining of the intestines and damages the kidneys. Food contaminated with E. Coli bacteria will not look or smell spoiled. Consumers should not consume the product, and can return the product to the store where it was purchased for reimbursement. -30- For more information, media please contact:
