August 25, 2006 - Air 1 assisted Surrey Detachment Traffic Unit
Air 1 assisted Surrey Detachment Traffic unit with aerial patrols of the King George Hwy corridor. Patrols resulted in three vehicles stopped for speed and change lanes without signal. A fourth vehicle, a motorcycle, was spotted by Aircrew speeding excessively.
When ground units attempted to stop the motorcycle, it took off at extreme speeds (220+ km/h). There was no vehicle pursuit as Air 1 was able to follow the motorcycle to a residence in the area of 126 St and 91 Ave, where it pulled in to a residence.
Ground members attended and detained multiple persons (one of which, the motorcycle's driver, had a Canada Wide Warrant) and recovered what turned out to be a stolen motorcycle. A second stolen motorcycle was also recovered. The investigation is ongoing at this time.

August 12, 2006 - Arrest of a Reckless Truck Thief
Air 1 played a crucial role in the safe arrest of a truck thief who took a wild ride through Langley, Surrey and Delta overnight. Air 1 tracked the stolen semi truck for over an hour as the suspect driver drove through stop lights and into oncoming traffic, and left a trail of flame and metal before finally coming to a stop.
The incident began at about 2:00 am when a Langley RCMP officer attempted to pull over a white semi truck that had been driving erratically on 200th street. The stolen truck from Abbotsford fled west on the Langley Bypass. The officer started but immediately terminated a police pursuit. The driver doubled back and attempted to ram a police vehicle on a side road before turning around to head into Surrey.
With Air 1 on scene, officers kept clear of the suspect vehicle to prevent further aggravating the situation. Numerous concerned and frightened motorists called the police as the suspect continued on his reckless journey. Air 1 observed the suspect vehicle from a discreet height and distance, updating ground units as to the location and direction of travel of the suspect vehicle.
With one tire punctured by a spike belt laid by Delta Police, the suspect continued his dangerous driving pattern including driving the wrong direction on several streets, attempting to ram police vehicles that were blocking intersections to protect innocent motorists, and attempting to carjack one vehicle. The truck eventually struck a concrete road divider at the intersection of 240th and Fraser Highway. Seeing that the truck could no longer move, Air 1 directed police to the scene to effect the driver’s arrest. The suspect, a 29 year old Surrey man recently released from jail with a long history of violent criminal convictions, is in custody and will be charged.
Through discreet air observation, Air 1 and ground units were able to avoid exacerbating the suspect’s reckless behaviour and capture the suspect safely .

August 9, 2006 - Capturing of Three Youths Involved in a Stolen Vehicle Air 1, Police Dog Services and the community worked with Coquitlam RCMP in the capturing of three youths involved with a stolen vehicle. At approximately 4:25 PM, a Coquitlam RCMP member noticed a car being driven by someone who appeared to be too young to drive. As the Police Officer turned around to check out the vehicle, it sped off around the corner. The occupants ditched the vehicle, and fled on foot into a nearby trail.
Air 1 and Coquitlam Police Dog Services assisted with locating and following the occupants of the vehicle which was found to have been stolen from a rental agency on the Barnett Highway. Witnesses in the area pointed out the direction that the suspects ran. The police dog later tracked two male suspects and assisted in their apprehension. The third male escaped but turned himself into the Coquitlam Detachment a short time later. The 15 year old male driver from Coquitlam will be charged. The other two youths, also from Coquitlam, were 15 and 17 years old respectively.
This was an excellent case of many units coming together and working as one with the community !!
