Overview
The International Operations Branch (IOB) provides direction, support and assistance – through their International Liaison Officer (LO) Program – to Canadian law enforcement agencies and key Government of Canada partners, in the prevention and detection of international offences relating to Canadian laws.

IOB is part of International Policing, a sector of the RCMP's Federal and International Operations (FIO) Directorate.

Mandate
With the RCMP's mandate to fight transnational crime, LOs play a significant role in Canadian investigations that reach beyond our borders. For example, LOs are always the lead whenever the RCMP engages another country in pursuing major and long-term investigations related to national security, drugs, organized crime, proceeds of crime, commercial crime, human smuggling etc. Using their knowledge of a host country, LOs are able to provide critical support to both domestic and international partners.

Activities
The 35 Liaison Officers currently representing the RCMP in 25 strategic locations around the world perform the following duties:

  • Faciliate major Canadian investigative inquiries in foreign countries.
  • Develop and maintain the exchange of criminal intelligence, including national security criminal intelligence, between the RCMP and approved foreign authorities.
  • Provide assistance to foreign agencies in investigations that affect Canada.
  • Coordinate and assist RCMP employees travelling abroad on official business.
  • Represent the RCMP at international conferences and seminars.
