Pay Equity Questions and Answers

Compensation Sector prepares equity payments

Now that an agreement has been concluded between the federal government and the Public Service Alliance of Canada, the Compensation Sector is preparing to issue payments for the approximately 228,000 public servants affected.

Pay and Pension systems are now being reprogrammed with the latest information on the settlement, and work has started on developing an interest calculation module. Payments for the groups affected -- CR, ST, DA-CON, EU, HS or LS – will be retroactive to March, 1985, as mandated by the Canadian Human Rights Commission. All current and former employees in the affected groups are eligible for retroactive payments. PWGSC and the Treasury Board are jointly working on a payment schedule that respects the four-to-six month processing timeframe for the initial payments as noted by Treasury Board in its communiqués on this topic.

An effort is also underway to re-issue in early 2000 the account selection reports for all departments and produce and distribute the PWGSC pro formas.

This Pay Equity Web page will be updated on a regular basis with the latest information on payment schedules and pro forma based input.

In January 2000, PWGSC will issue a Compensation Directive on pay equity.

PWGSC and TB representatives will visit each region during the last quarter of the 1999-2000 fiscal year to discuss details of the pay equity process.
