Biography
Rodney G. (Rod) Smith

Assistant Commissioner Smith was born near Montreal, Quebec. He
was raised and received his early education in Quebec, Ontario,
England and France.
He joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in 1972. After basic
recruit training in Regina, Saskatchewan, he served in a variety
of federal, provincial and municipal policing units in Ontario and
New Brunswick.
In 1988, he received his commission to Inspector and was transferred
to divisional command positions in audit, strategic planning, and
criminal operations in New Brunswick; and later, as Superintendent,
in human resources, special projects, and federal policing at the
RCMP’s National Headquarters in Ottawa, Ontario. In 2001,
he was promoted to Assistant Commissioner to lead the Information
& Identification component of Canada’s National Police
Services. In February 2004 he joined the Human Resources Sector
with responsibility for the honours & recognition, professional
standards, external review, grievance, discipline, harassment, alternate
dispute resolution, labour relations, human rights, and Member Representative
programs of the RCMP. He assumed his current role in January 2005
where he is committed to promoting standards for ethical behaviour,
towards ensuring a respectful workplace and enhanced public trust.
Assistant Commissioner Smith is a member of several national and
international ethics committees, the RCMP's Senior Management Team,
and Senior Executive Committee.
Assistant Commissioner Smith holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree majoring
in Sociology/Anthropology from Carleton University (1987) and a
Bachelor of Law Degree (LL.B) from the University of New Brunswick
(1995). He also holds certificates in General, Specialized and Advanced
Police Studies from the Canadian Police College and is a graduate
of Queen’s University’s Public Executive Program. He
is bilingual (English/French). He was awarded the RCMP Long Service
Medal in 1992, the Bronze Clasp in 1997, the Silver Clasp in 2002,
and the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal in 2003.
In their leisure time, Assistant Commissioner Smith and his spouse
Raye enjoy golf, curling and travel.
