B.C. Company Fined $1,500 for Selling Coconut Juice with Undeclared Sulphites

Stars Trading Co., Ltd. entered a guilty plea in Richmond Provincial Court on Nov. 20, 2003 to one count of violating the Food and Drugs Act. The company was fined $1,500 for unlawfully selling coconut juice with pulp which contained undeclared sulphites.

The company had been warned by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency about the requirements under the Food and Drugs Act, but continued to import and sell products containing undeclared sulphites.

It is unlawful to label, package, treat, process, sell or advertise any food in a manner that is false, misleading or deceptive or is likely to create an erroneous impression regarding its character, value, quantity, composition, merit or safety.

For consumers with serious food allergies, it is important for manufacturers or importers to ensure accurate ingredient information is contained on the label.
