Vancouver, B.C.

Company Selling Beef From Out of Province Gets Fined

On April 16, 2004, South Seas Meats Ltd. of Vancouver, B.C. entered a guilty plea in Vancouver Provincial Court to one count of violating the Meat Inspection Act. The company was fined $1,500.

On Jan. 31, 2003, as a result of a trade complaint, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency visited a retail premise in Edmonton. Upon inspection, the CFIA found and detained a quantity of beef product from B.C. that had not been processed in a federally-registered establishment. Under the Meat Inspection Act, the interprovincial transportation of meat products prepared in non-federally registered establishments is illegal. Invoices obtained indicated that the sender was South Seas Meats Ltd., located in Vancouver, B.C.

The CFIA takes food safety seriously and inspection helps to continue Canada’s excellent reputation domestically and internationally as having a safe and high quality food supply.
