SALE OF MEAT PRODUCTS FROM A NON-FEDERALLY REGISTERED ALBERTA ESTABLISHMENT COSTLY TO BRITISH COLUMBIA WHOLESALER

On April 23, 2004, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) conducted an inspection at Shoppers Food Mart Ltd.’s premises in Prince George, British Columbia. Inside, the CFIA found meat products for sale that were obtained from an establishment in Alberta that was not registered under the federal Meat Inspection Act.

Paragraph 10(2)(a) of the Meat Inspection Act prohibits the advertisement, sale or possession for any such purpose of a meat product that has been sent or conveyed from one province to another, unless it complies with the prescribed standards and is packaged and labelled in the prescribed manner. A contravention of this prohibition is an offence under the Act.

On December 15, 2005, Shoppers Food Mart Ltd. entered a guilty plea in provincial court in Prince George to an offence under the Meat Inspection Act and was fined $2,500.

The CFIA is responsible for enforcing a variety of federal legislation, including the Meat Inspection Act and its regulations. It protects consumers by contributing to food safety, the protection of plants and the health of animals in Canada.
