Federal Investigation Section

The “A” Division Federal Investigation Section’s (FIS) mandate is remarkably diverse, encompassing many aspects of local, national and international law enforcement. The section is responsible for policing 286 federal statutes and 17 sets of federal regulations.

Under its Consumer Protection Policing Services, investigators enforce acts relating to copyright, trademarks, radiocommunications (e.g. illegal satellite dishes), patents, weights and measures (e.g. odometer tampering on used cars), and Canadian human rights, just to name a few.

FIS provides policing services to the federal government to protect it from fraud and financial loss by enforcing the acts that cover the Canada Pension Plan, Old Age Security, Canada Student Loans and Children’s Special Allowance.

Investigators are also called upon to provide policing services to protect the environment, wildlife and endangered species by enforcing the Canadian Wildlife Act, the National Park Act, the Canadian Environmental Protection Act and the Hazardous Products Act.

The section’s duties are a mix of policing services, problem-oriented policing, case management, education and crime prevention programs. Investigations with organized crime components are given top priority.

Anyone who has information concerning a person(s) who may be involved in the commission of an offence in relation to the above is invited to report their concerns to the nearest office of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police or contact:
