It has long been known that a form of viral hepatitis
distinct from hepatitis A and B existed, but it was only in 1989
that the hepatitis C virus was first identified. Hepatitis is a
disease characterized by inflammation of the liver. Although some
people may experience symptoms such as fatigue and jaundice following
initial infection, many others have no symptoms.
The Hepatitis C Prevention, Support & Research Program intends
to increase awareness, promote positive prevention behaviours,
expand research activity and increase the government's capacity
to respond to this health threat. |
