The Regulation of Plants with Novel Traits in Canada

Plants with Novel Traits
(PNTs) are regulated by the CFIA

If the PNT is to be grown in a contained environment, Health Canada's Laboratory Biosafety Guidelines are recommended.

If confined field trials are to be conducted, refer to Regulatory Directive 2000-07, under the Seeds Regulations, Part V.

If the PNT is to be imported into Canada, see Regulatory Directive D-96-13 under the Plant Protection Act. Information on obtaining an import permit is also available.

If unconfined release is intended, refer to the Regulatory Directive 94-08 under the Seeds Regulations, Part V.

If unregistered pesticide use is intended, consult the Pest Management Regulatory Agency.

When unconfined release is authorized, Decision Documents are published

Biology Documents that are companions to Directive 94-08, are available for
several plant species including Canola, Flax, Corn, Potato, Soybean and Wheat

If variety registration is intended, refer to Variety Registration under the Seeds Regulations, Part III.

If livestock feed use is intended, refer to Regulatory Directive 95-03 under the Feeds Act and Regulations.

If human food use is intended, refer to Health Canada's Novel Food Regulations under the Food and Drugs Act.
