CFIA Plum Pox Virus Survey Update – October 31, 2001

1a. General Survey Activities in Ontario

Sampling is completed for 2001.  There was one detection at an orchard property in Stoney Creek, within approximately 3.5 km of the existing quarantine zone boundary for Niagara.  The property has been placed under Notice of Prohibition of Movement.

Niagara Quarantine Zone

CFIA sampling in Niagara began in late May and has focused on Propagative Material, and blocks identified as having had detection of PPV in the 2000 season.

Agricorp, a crown corporation in Ontario, sampled blocks inside the Niagara Quarantine Zone which were identified as having no detections for PPV in the 2000 season or were not sampled. For regulatory purposes, CFIA confirmed any PPV detections found by Agricorp.

Presently following up on positives identified by Agricorp for regulatory purposes.

1b. Activities in the Ontario Quarantine Zones (other than Niagara)

All sampling within the 3 zones has been completed. A detection for PPV has been found at one block in Fonthill zone, one block in Vittoria zone and one block in Blenheim zone. A notice to dispose of trees has been issued for all positive blocks.

2a. Activities in Nova Scotia Quarantine Zone

Surveying began in the NS Quarantine Zone on June 19, 2001 and concluded on June 21, 2001 with two farms being sampled. No homeowner or wild samples were identified within the 100m buffer zone of the detected orchard block from the 2000 season. In total, 11 blocks were sampled, no detections were identified in official results.

2b. General survey Activities - Nova Scotia

The general detection survey began on June 22, 2001 following completion of sampling within the quarantine zone. 225 blocks were sampled, no detections were identified in official results.

3. General Detection Survey for British Columbia

The survey began on May 14, 2001. The survey was completed on July 9, 2001. Samples were collected from 648 blocks from 207 growers including 4 nurseries, no detections were identified in official results.
