Summary
The Institute of Aging of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the National Institute on Aging of the National Institutes of Health recognize a continuing and expanding need to train new researchers in aging research. The World Health Organization warns of a demographic revolution underway throughout the world. Today, world-wide, there are around 600 million persons aged 60 years and over; this total will double by 2025 and will reach virtually two billion by 2050 - the vast majority in the developing world.

These needs have spawned a collaboration wherein the Institute of Aging of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the National Institute on Aging of the National Institutes of Health (CIHR-IA and NIH-NIA) will invest resources to enhance the scope of research training and to further the role of Canada and the United States in enhancing research capacity in the field of aging.
