Operating Grant: Breast Cancer

(Canadian Breast Cancer Research Alliance)

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research, together with the National Cancer Institute of Canada (NCIC), Health Canada, the Canadian Cancer Society, the Avon Flame Foundation (formerly the Breast Cancer International Centre), the Canadian Breast Cancer Network and the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation are funding partners in the Canadian Breast Cancer Research Alliance (CBCRA).

It is the objective of the Alliance to fund a broad spectrum of cancer research in Canada that will have relevance for prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and palliation for people impacted by breast cancer. Such research could encompass, but is not limited to, fundamental laboratory investigations, clinical trials and epidemiological, psychosocial and behavioural studies and health care research. The ultimate goal is the prevention, cure and eradication of breast cancer.

CBCRA is a partnership which is designed to combine and build upon the principles, standards and expertise of the agencies involved. The two mechanisms of support are as follows:

1) CBCRA/CIHR operating grants - to be adjudicated through CIHR peer review

2) CBCRA operating grants - to be adjudicated through NCIC peer review

CBCRA/CIHR Operating Grants (Updated: 2005-11-09)

The CBCRA/CIHR operating grants represent expanded opportunities for breast cancer investigators in Canada. Applications will be reviewed through CIHR review panels as regular CIHR operating grant applications. Eligibility as a CBCRA/CIHR operating grant will be determined after submission. There will be two competitions per year, on September 15th and March 1st, beginning with the September 15, 2003 competition. Grant applications must conform to all CIHR requirements and deadlines for registration and submission.

The application process is comprised of two steps:  Registration and Full Application.

Review the application instructions provided in How to Apply for a Grant or Award.

Select Operating Grants (Registration and Application) from the Research Funding Programs Application Packages.

(Updated: 2006-09-18)
Since applications are adjudicated and administered by CIHR, grantees will be required to submit annual financial reports to CIHR. In addition, because these grants are also considered CBCRA grants, grantees will be required to submit, to the CBCRA office, annual progress reports (to the attention of Dr. Pascale Macgregor, Canadian Breast Cancer Research Alliance, 375 University Avenue, 6th floor, Toronto ON M5G 2J5), as well as lists of all publications resulting in whole or in part from their CBCRA/CIHR grant. These publications will be included in the CBCRA Research Portfolio. Grantees will also be invited to present their results at CBCRA's Reasons for Hope conferences.

CBCRA Operating Grants

CBCRA operating grant applications will continue to be offered, as previously. There will continue to be one competition per year, on October 15th. CBCRA operating grant applications will continue to conform to NCIC requirements and deadlines. Applications will be submitted c/o NCIC, reviewed by NCIC panels, and administered by NCIC, but will continue to be CBCRA grants, as previously. Submission of annual progress reports with lists of publications to the CBCRA office will continue to be mandatory, and grantees will continue to be invited to present their results at CBCRA's conferences.

Applications are available from CBCRA's website: http://www.breast.cancer.ca/

Applications must be submitted to the NCIC site:
