CIHR's contribution to the amount available for this initiative is subject to availability of funds voted annually to CIHR by parliamentary appropriations, and the conditions that may be attached to them. The Maud Menten New Investigator Prizes consists of a one-year, non-renewable $30,000 research grant in each of the following research areas: i) biomedical; ii) clinical; and iii) health services/population health/genetic ethical, legal and social issues. The research grant is intended to offset the direct costs of the recipient's research program. For each of the research areas, the IG also makes available two finalist prizes. The finalist prizes consist of a one-year, non-renewable $1,000 research grant. These research grants are intended to offset the direct costs of the recipient/finalist's research program. | |

To honour Dr. Maud Menten, the Institute of Genetics has established the Maud Menten New Principal Investigator Prizes. Dr. Menten's outstanding career as a biomedical scientist led to many achievements including important co-discoveries relating to blood sugar, haemoglobin and kidney functions. In 1913, a collaboration with Leonor Michaelis on the behaviour of enzymes resulted in the Michaelis-Menten equation, a biochemical concept so fundamental that it is familiar to first-year science students.
This program is designed to recognize and support the research excellence of Canadian New Investigators working within the IG's mandate. The Maud Menten New Investigator Prizes consist of a one-year, non-renewable $30,000 research grant. Annually the IG makes available a prize in each of the following research areas: i) biomedical; ii) clinical; and iii) health services/population health, including genetic ethical, legal and social issues. Eligibility criteria for all CIHR research funding programs apply. The business office of the institution of an eligible Nominated Principal Applicant generally administers CIHR funds. Please refer to the Eligibility Requirements for CIHR Grants and Awards regarding the eligibility requirements for individuals and institutions.
Specific Eligibility Requirements
All Nominated Principal Investigators who meet the following criteria will be considered for the 2007 Maud Menten New Principal Investigator Prize:

An Ad hoc Committee consisting of members of the IG's Institute Advisory Board and the Chair of the IG New Principal Investigators Planning & Priority Committee will perform a relevance review to verify:
The Ad hoc Committee will have access to the anonymized project titles and summaries from the operating grant applications (page 9 of the Research Module).
The New Principal Investigator with the highest rated CIHR Operating Grant application in each research area will be the recipient of one of the three prizes. It is possible that a prize will not be given in any one category/year if the above requirements and selection criteria are not met.
This Priority Announcement will follow the General Guidelines for Grant Programs. Applicants are encouraged to demonstrate the use of gender and sex-based analysis in applications.
All conditions specified in CIHR General Grants and Awards Policies shall apply to applications funded through this Request for Applications. Conditions cover areas such as Applicant and Institutional Responsibilities, Ethics, Official language policy, Access to Information and Privacy Acts, and Acknowledgement of CIHR Support. Successful applicants will be informed of any special financial conditions prior to the release of funds or when they receive CIHR's Authorization for Funding (AFF) document.
Before receiving an authorization for funding from CIHR, the selected recipients must provide CIHR with a statement explaining how the grant will be used to augment their approved research project beyond the scope or scale of the project that will be supported with the aid of the original CIRH operating grant award.
Access to Information Act and Privacy Act, and the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA)
All personal information collected by CIHR about applicants is used to review applications, to recruit reviewers, to administer and monitor grants and awards, to compile statistics, and to promote and support health research in Canada. Consistent with these purposes, applicants should also expect that information collected by CIHR may be shared as described in Use and Disclosure of Personal Information Provided to CIHR for Peer Review.
CIHR as a federal entity is subject to the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act, therefore the requirements of these two statutes will apply to all information located in CIHR's premises including, without limitation, cost-sharing agreements related to this Request for Applications and all matters pertaining thereto.
While respecting the application of the Privacy Act to federal entities, all signing parties involved in a collaborative agreement will also be bound by the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA). All personal information (as identified by the PIPEDA) collected, used or disclosed in the course of any commercial activity under collaborative agreements related to the Request for Applications will be collected, used and disclosed in compliance with the PIPEDA.
Prize recipients are required to acknowledge CIHR, its institutes and partners in any communication or publication related to the project. See CIHR General Grants and Awards Policies, Acknowledgement of CIHR's Support for details on CIHR's communication requirements. The contributing institutes / partners will be identified on the Authorization for Funding and decision letter.
