The purpose of the Medical Research Fund of New Brunswick
is to provide financial assistance for health-related research within
the province.
Project applications to the Fund must meet all
the following eligibility criteria:
- Projects must be health-related, for example:
- health service evaluation,
- drug utilization,
- epidemiology,
- health promotion,
- disease prevention,
- clinical therapy,
- physiology,
- nutrition,
- pharmacology and
- bioengineering.
- Funds earmarked for kidney-related research are available
through the Wordel Fund. A brochure is available outlining eligibility
criteria and other information for this fund.
Projects must be of one of the following types:

Research studies which assess health needs and/or evaluate
services that will result in improved health status or delivery of
health care services.

Related scientific activities which organize available
data under a hypothesis that results in a conclusion. These study
the nature, incidence and prevalence of health problems in New Brunswick.

Research and/or development which generates new data
under a hypothesis that results in a conclusion. The research must
be unique.

Projects must be self-contained and conducted within
a 12-18 month period.

The principal researcher must be affiliated with a
university, health service institution/agency, voluntary health agency
or non-profit research centre/organization.

Applicants need not have a specific professional background,
although their training and experience should be suitable to the nature
of the research project.

The principal researcher must be a New Brunswick resident,
and have an office in New Brunswick. As much work as possible should
be performed in the province.

Grants are made for one year. Both successful and unsuccessful
applicants may apply again in subsequent years.

The ceiling for funding of an individual award is $25,000.
- Grants from the Medical Research Fund of New Brunswick
are awarded once every two years. The next competition will commence
in the fall of 2007.
All eligible applications submitted to the Medical Research
Fund of New Brunswick during a competition are evaluated by an Awards
Committee, consisting of peer referees. Evaluation is be based on the
scientific merit of the project, the research capability of the investigator(s)
and the potential significance of the research to New Brunswick.
