As one of four federal partners under the Federal Initiative to Address HIV/AIDS in Canada, CIHR-III administers the CIHR HIV/AIDS Research Initiative and funds meritorious research grants and personnel awards in strategic areas of HIV/AIDS research, including community-based research. In keeping with the intent of the Federal Initiative, the CIHR HIV/AIDS Research Initiative promotes Canadian research, which increases our understanding of the virus, the epidemic and effective responses.
The Community-Based Research Program is an important component of the CIHR HIV/AIDS Research Initiative. The intention of this program is to support the goals of the Federal Initiative to Address HIV/AIDS in Canada and to help communities in their fight against HIV/AIDS. Community-based research is a form of research in which principles of community involvement and collaboration are applied using scientifically accepted research methods. The research must demonstrate direct community involvement, community relevance, equity in partnerships and methodological rigour.
