Registration - X500 Addresses
Directory structure
ISO/IEC Standard 9594, parts 1 to 8, specify a model of a global
directory system and the services it provides. CCITT Recommendations
X.500 to X.521 are equivalent to the ISO standards. Although one
of the primary purposes for establishing a global directory service
is to store addresses to support messaging services such as X.400
MHS, the directory can be used to store information about any object
and can be used by many other applications.
Any organization can register at the national level for an organization
name; however, it is recommended that only organizations that are
national in scope, for example organizations that have a national
charter or that operate in more than one province or territory,
apply for a national registration. Such an organization is more
likely to have a name that is nationally unambiguous and that can
withstand the challenge process.
Note that an organization name registered is guaranteed to be unique
only with respect to the Directory Information Tree (DIT). For example,
an organization wishing to register an organization name at the
national level, in one of the provinces, and in a municipality must
register at each level.
Organization name values must satisfy the following constraints:
a. the name must be no more than 64 characters in length as specified
in ISO Standard 9594-6; and
b. in accordance with ISO Standard 8824, the characters that may
be used are limited to:
