CIHR Knowledge Translation Definition
CIHR defines knowledge translation as "the exchange, synthesis, and ethically-sound application of knowledge - within a complex set of interactions among researchers and users - to accelerate the capture of the benefits of research for Canadians through improved health, more effective services and products, and a strengthened health care system".
Knowledge translation activities eligible for this award include:
CIHR acknowledges that knowledge translation strategies and activities vary according to the type of research to be translated (e.g., biomedical, clinical, health services and policy, and population and public health), and the intended user audience (e.g., primary users of research may be other researchers, front-line practitioners, health system managers, policy-makers, or the general public).
The Canadian Institutes of Health Research Knowledge Translation Award honours and supports teams or organizations that, through knowledge translation research and/or active evidence-based KT, make an outstanding contribution to the health of Canadians or to the health system. The aim of the award is to recognize excellence in knowledge translation, and to provide financial support to further foster excellence in knowledge translation in Canada.
One recipient may be selected for an award each year, for the achievements of a team or organization. CIHR invites nominations for teams or organizations with significant achievements in knowledge translation activities relevant to any area of health research (e.g., biomedical, clinical, health services and policy, and population and public health).
The achievements of a team or organization recipient of the CIHR Knowledge Translation Award will be celebrated at the annual CIHR Awards Ceremony in Ottawa on November 24th, 2004. The Award will consist of a certificate of recognition and a grant of $100,000, to be used to advance knowledge translation activities in a way designated by the winner, consistent with CIHR's rules for eligible expenditures. The grant will be paid in 2 installments, over two fiscal years, with the second installment payable following demonstrated investment of the first installment in knowledge translation.
The Award winner will be invited to attend CIHR's Awards Night - "A Celebration of Excellence" in Ottawa on November 24th, 2004. Travel expenses to attend the celebration will be paid by CIHR for one representative of the team or organization. Recipients will also be highlighted in CIHR communication materials, including the CIHR the website, and at CIHR's corporate office in Ottawa.
Eligibility Criteria
CIHR welcomes nominations for teams or organizations working in Canada in the health field, including: health planners, managers, policy makers and administrators; health practitioners; health researchers; not-for-profit organizations with a research or knowledge translation mandate including professional associations; those involved in public health or public policy; groups representing survivors of or patients with a specific health problem; and health research funding organizations. While CIHR funding is not a pre-requisite for eligibility, CIHR expects that the exemplary knowledge translation activities of eligible teams or organizations normally will have attracted external research funding.
For-profit businesses and corporations, or departments and agencies of the federal government, may be nominated for an award, but cannot receive the grant associated with the award.
The award can be received by a team or organization only once. Individuals who have received the award in the past may apply as part of a different team or organization. CIHR will not necessarily award a recipient every year.
Anyone with direct knowledge of the contribution of the nominee(s) can nominate a recipient. Nominators can be colleagues, or people who have benefited from the nominee's activities. Self-nominations are accepted.
Nominations will be received by CIHR until September 20th, 2004.
Nominations for The CIHR Knowledge Translation Award will be reviewed by the KT Award Committee, which is a sub-committee of the CIHR Governing Council Knowledge Translation Working Group. The winner will be notified by September 30th, 2004.
