OTTAWA (October 23, 2006) - International health researchers from around the world are gathering at Québec's annual public health conference in Montréal from October 23-27, 2006. This event is the largest of its kind in Québec. The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) is a partner.

For the first time in ten years, an international component has been added to the agenda. Participants will look beyond jurisdictional boundaries to learn from experiences and models from all over the world which could potentially be integrated into our public health practice. Dr. John Frank, Scientific Director of CIHR Institute of Population and Public Health, will lead the two discussions on the international experience.

"Canada's experience with public health crises has signaled the importance of a strong public health system at all levels that rely on the best available global evidence," said Dr. Frank, Scientific Director at CIHR.

Public health is however not only about crisis preparedness, it is also about finding ways to prevent and control prevalent chronic diseases such as obesity, mental health, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, just to name a few.

France, Australia, USA and Scandinavian countries all have representatives at the conference.

Dr. Frank is available to discuss important best practices and also current research in the area of public health.
