are pleased to announce the results for the Reducing Health Disparities and Promoting Equity for Vulnerable Populations - Interdisciplinary Capacity Enhancement Grants competition.

Part of CIHR's mandate is to harness research to improve the health status of vulnerable populations. The goal of the Reducing Health Disparities Initiative is to generate outstanding research and build excellent research capacity to document, analyze, and contribute to reducing health disparities.

Over the last three years, the Reducing Health Disparities Initiative launched three Requests for Applications (RFA's). The first two RFA's attracted close to 100 applications across the country and 24 interdisciplinary research teams were funded for one year. This third RFA, offering multi-year funding through Interdisciplinary Capacity Enhancement (ICE) Grants, received an even greater response from the research community (73 letters of intent).

The purpose of the Interdisciplinary Capacity Enhancement (ICE) grant program is to provide support for new or existing groups conducting multi-disciplinary research on themes that align with this strategic initiative. The grants will enable teams to build capacity and add expertise to their core capacities and develop strategies for knowledge translation. It is expected that this targeted investment will lead to understanding and addressing health disparities, and improving the health status of vulnerable populations.

In approving the results of the Reducing Health Disparities - Interdisciplinary Capacity Enhancement Grant program, the partners took into account the need to provide the highest level of funding, considering the constraints on budgets and the balance between size of grant and number of grants awarded.

A total of 62 researchers who submitted Letters of Intent were invited to submit full applications in November 2005. The 58 applications received were peer reviewed by the interdisciplinary and cross-thematic "Health Disparities" A and B committees (HDA and HDB), resulting in 20 applications being approved for funding (success rate of 34%). Funding of these grants was made possible by reducing the recommended budgets of the funded proposals by an average 18%.
