2005-2006 Update

The Federal Initiative to Address HIV/AIDS in Canada
In January 2005, the Government of Canada reaffirmed its commitment to fight the HIV/AIDS epidemic by announcing an increase in federal funding from $42.2 million to $84.4 million by 2008-2009. As one of the federal partners in the Federal Initiative to Address HIV/AIDS in Canada (FI-HIV/AIDS), the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) sets priorities for and administers the Federal Initiative's extramural research. In support of these activities, the CIHR HIV/AIDS Research Initiative will see an increase in funding from its initial $10 million in 2003-2004 to $22.6 million by 2008-2009. Funding will be disbursed across four major areas - biomedical and clinical research, health services and population health research, Canadian HIV trials and community-based research.

Funding Excellent Research
In 2005-2006, the HIV/AIDS Research Initiative administered almost $15 million for HIV/AIDS-related research from the FIHIV/ AIDS. In addition to the funds provided through the FIHIV/ AIDS, CIHR provides a minimum of $3.5 million to HIV/AIDS research. CIHR's actual commitment to HIV/AIDS research in 2005-2006 was $8.4 million for direct HIV/AIDS research and an additional $11.3 million committed to research indirectly related to HIV/AIDS.

Working in Partnership
The HIV/AIDS Research Initiative is managed by the CIHR Institute of Infection and Immunity (III), under the leadership of Dr. Bhagirath Singh. The program leads in the identification of research priorities and develops research initiatives to reduce the burden of HIV/AIDS domestically and internationally.

The CIHR HIV/AIDS Research Advisory Committee (CHARAC) continues to provide strong strategic advice and direction to aid in the development of future targeted Requests for Applications in support of the FI-HIV/AIDS. CHARAC brings together researchers from all pillars of health research, five CIHR Institutes, community representatives, the Public Health Agency of Canada and the Ministerial Council on HIV/AIDS.
