The goal of the Health Statistics Data Users conference is to provide an opportunity for individuals who provide and/or use health data to meet to discuss data collection, analysis, and dissemination.

Providers and current and potential users of health data will find this conference of benefit to them. Dr. Robert Evans from the Centre for Health Services and Policy Research at the University of British Columbia will be the keynote speaker, while Mr. André Picard, the Globe and Mail’s public health reporter will be the after-dinner guest speaker on the Monday evening.

Interesting and provocative sessions will focus on subjects ranging from the collection of data through to quality and privacy as they relate to users of health statistics. There will also be a round table discussion on the future direction of health statistics.

At the end of this conference, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the availability and accessibility of Canadian health data
  • Describe examples of health data analysis
  • Identify data quality issues (e.g., timeliness, completeness, reliability)
  • Identify issues related to methodology (e.g., data collection, creating life tables, ICD-10 coding)
  • Consider privacy and ethical issues in the collection and use of health data

The target audience for the conference is Canadian health data providers and users. This includes, but is not limited to the following organizations/individuals:

  • Statistics Canada
  • Vital Statistics and Cancer registries
  • Researchers
  • Health Canada
  • Health policy/program planners and decision-makers
  • Epidemiologists
  • Public Health
  • Social Service

Non-government organizations such as Canadian Health Services Research Foundation, Canadian Public Health Association, Canadian Institute for Health Information would also find this conference of interest.
