CIHR's Second Brainstorming Session: Invitation to Contribute
In June 2000, one week after the launch of CIHR, President Alan Bernstein invited researchers from across Canada to a brainstorming session to seek early views from the research community on potential CIHR policies, programs and structures. Twenty-five researchers devoted two days of their time to examine the opportunities and challenges we all face in achieving the vision of CIHR.
CIHR is now just over a year old, and it is time to return to the research community for advice which will guide CIHR in the next stage of its development, as well as to let us know how we have done in our first year of operation. A group of researchers, from all four CIHR research themes, will meet in Ottawa on August 13th and 14th. On this occasion, the invitation list focuses on those at the earlier stages of their careers. Participants will be asked to consider the following questions:
What is the research community's perception of CIHR's achievements in its first year?
What impact have the 13 Institutes had on the research community? Have they begun to act as meeting places for their research communities? How might this process be accelerated?
- CIHRwishes to stimulate interdisciplinary, collaborative research. Has CIHR made progress towards this goal? Has the research community recognised and responded to this goal?
What should be CIHR's priorities in the next 12 months, now that the initial phase of Institute creation is over?
How should the peer review process be revised to reflect both CIHR's broadened mandate and current scientific opportunities?
Thinking ahead five years, what is your vision of CIHR, and its role in creating a research environment in which your career, and those of your trainees, will flourish?
Because we can only invite a very small sample of the health research community to the session, and we would like all interested in health research to have an opportunity to contribute to the free flow of ideas, we invite you to send us your comments on the six topics listed above, or on related issues. Please e-mail your comments to mbisby@cihr-irsc.gc.ca and in the "subject" line type "brainstorming". We would appreciate receiving your comments by August 9th.
CIHR will post a report of the session on this website.
