CIHR: The Momentum Continues

Message from the President of CIHR

The federal government has demonstrated once again its commitment to health and health research, despite difficult economic times. Thanks to strategic investments in people, ideas and infrastructure, Canada has the tools necessary to be internationally competitive. As well, the government acknowledged the importance of sustaining the momentum created since CIHR was established 18 months ago.

This budget increase will enable Canada's health research community to create the new knowledge necessary to fight disease, improve the health of Canadians, develop an innovative health system and support the growth of our country's vibrant biotechnology sector. It will also help our Scientific Directors to advance their institutes, foster strategic alliances with funding partners in the voluntary, public and private sectors and assist universities, hospitals and research centers across Canada to attract and retain the world's best health researchers. It complements other budget initiatives, such as helping offset indirect research costs at universities and research hospitals, and illustrates the federal government's resolve to invest in Canada's future.
