President's Announcement

December 2003 RFA Launch

CIHR is pleased to launch a series of 20 exciting RFAs that respond to the strategic priorities of our 13 Institutes, scientific opportunity and the health challenges facing Canadians.

17 of the 20 RFAs being launched today are relaunches of previously announced initiatives - sustained efforts to make progress in a few selected priority areas that have demonstrated promising results to date. As such, they are evidence that CIHR-funded health research is working toward results that will make a difference for Canadians.

Further, these RFAs are in full alignment with CIHR's key strategic directions, as set out in Blueprint, CIHR's strategic plan to guide it through 2007:

  1. Strengthen Canada's health research communities.
  2. Address emerging health challenges and develop national research platforms and initiatives.
  3. Develop and support a balanced research agenda that includes research on disease mechanisms, disease prevention and cure, and health promotion.
  4. Harness research to improve the health status of vulnerable populations.
  5. Support health innovations that contribute to a more productive health system and prosperous economy.

These RFAs will help position Canada and the Canadian health research community as one of the most innovative and leading edge countries in the world and continue our efforts to build on the strong base of research excellence that already exists in this country.
