CIHR Task Force on Career Support Seeks Input from the Research Community

CIHR Task Force on Career Support

Dear Colleagues:

The CIHR Task Force on Career Support has begun its work. Already, many members of the research community have taken the time to express their thoughts on the future of CIHR's salary support programs to one or more Task Force members. Please be assured that your input to our deliberations is highly valued.

The Task Force has identified the need to consult with the research community as the most important element of its work. As a result, two surveys are in preparation - one designed to collect the ideas of a sample of individual researchers and the other directed to institutional leaders, both seeking data and insight on the importance and impact of CIHR salary support programs.

Beyond the surveys, the Task Force would like to take this opportunity to actively invite submissions from others in the research community. If you wish to submit comments to the Task Force, you may do so via: careerTF-GTcarriere@cihr-irsc.gc.ca

Sincerely,

Brenda Andrews, Chair, CIHR Task Force on Career Support

President's Message

At its June 2003 meeting, CIHR's Governing Council suspended CIHR's Investigator and Senior Investigator programs. This decision was made in consideration of what the appropriate niche would be for CIHR in the world of salary awards, given the context of the overall CIHR budget and other federal initiatives such as the Canada Research Chairs (CRC) program.

CIHR's Governing Council reconsidered its suspension of the salary awards programs at its June 2004 meeting, in light of CIHR's budget prospects for fiscal year 2005-06 and in response to wide expressions of support for CIHR's Career Awards. Council decided to establish a National Task Force on Career Support with a mandate to undertake a comprehensive analysis of CIHR's suite of salary support programs, relative to the overall Canadian salary awards landscape, and make recommendations on CIHR's future role in this area. The Task Force, which had its first meeting last week, includes outstanding health researchers from across the country. The members are:

Dr. Brenda Andrews, Chair
Director, The Terrence Donnelly Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research
University of Toronto

Dr. Andreas Laupacis
President, Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES)
University of Toronto

Dr. André Cantin
Professeur, Département de pneumologie
Université de Sherbrooke

Dr. Paul Goodyer
Department of Pediatrics
McGill University

Dr. Philip Hieter
Director, Biotechnology Laboratory
University of British Columbia

Dr. Gerald Johnston
Chair, Department of Microbiology
and Immunology
Dalhousie University

Dr. Kathryn King
Departments of Nursing/Community Health Sciences
University of Calgary

Dr. Neena L. Chappell
Professor, Department of Sociology
University of Victoria

Dr. Ravi Menon
Professor, Robarts Research Institute
University of Western Ontario

Dr. Alain Beaudet
Président, Fonds de la recherche en santé du Québec

Dr. Debbie Feldman
École de réadapation, Université de Montréal

The Task Force report and recommendations will be submitted for CIHR's Governing Council's consideration at its November 2004 meeting. At that time, based on the recommendations of the Task Force, CIHR's Governing Council will reconsider its earlier decision to suspend Investigator and Senior Investigator Awards.

Dr. Alan Bernstein, O.C., FRSC
